Miscarriage is both deeply personal, and heartbreakingly common. I remember seeing the statistics of how common it is, and feeling that this knowledge diminished my pain in some way - because if that many women have experienced it, then why was I the one falling apart?
The most powerful thing that helped me was to acknowledge that what I was feeling was grief. And, that the grief was valid/allowed/okay because I already loved that baby.
It sounds simple, but in a culture where we are 'expected' to hide our pregnancies until after a 12-week scan, I was totally unprepared for the reality of what I was feeling.
So if you are reading this following miscarriage, firstly please know that this is a time for grief and for healing. A time to rebuild trust in your body and mind, and be gentle with yourself as you move towards Trying Again.
