'Babies' on the BBC

March 31, 20262 min read

With the release of the new BBC series ‘Babies’, we are seeing the conversation around conception being brought into mainstream media. I’ll be honest – the emotions hit me within the first 4 minutes of episode 1. And, the reality of this part of a couple’s life, with its ups and downs, hope and grief, is why I started my business.

If this is the chapter of life that you are in right now, I would say that investing 6 hours watching someone else’s journey play out on screen might not be what you need. The series is for those around you who need a bit more insight into what you may be going through, so that they can tread a little more carefully around celebrations that might hit you like a ton of bricks, or so that they can rethink whether to ask invasive questions about your sex life and internal organs..!

I’ll be watching the series slowly, and with an eye on how I am physically and mentally responding to the subject matter of trying to conceive, and specifically the subject of miscarriage. Because I am lucky enough to be a Mum, and also my girls came along following losses.

So please take care – I know that they have added lots of Trigger Warnings to the information about the show, but it’s also still possible to think that ‘enough’ time has passed for us to feel ok when we’re not.

And if you haven’t been down this path of Trying, please watch the show, and talk about it with sensitivity. Open your heart to the characters. Statistically, you will know someone who has also experienced miscarriage or struggling to get pregnant, even if they haven’t shared.

You never know who is listening / watching / reading your opinion about fertility and TTC. The way you respond to a series like this will show whether you are a safe space for them…

Or not.
